Research Activities

Dr. Muhammad Shahid Arshad, a distinguished material scientist, has made significant contributions across various research fields, notably in magnetism, nanostructured materials, and surface science. With a B.Sc (Hons) in Physics from the University of Punjab and an M.Sc in Applied Physics from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), he completed his Ph.D. in Nanostructured Materials at the Jožef Stefan Institute. His work in magnetism, particularly on CoPt-nanostructures, has advanced the understanding of magnetic domains and magnetization reversal, with implications for hard-disk drives and race-track memory devices. While at the National Institute of Chemistry, Dr. Arshad's focus shifted to the catalytic activities of nanostructures, where he developed doped TiO2 nanorods for water purification and CO2 reduction, resulting in three high-impact publications. His tenure at the University of Ljubljana was marked by both research and administrative roles, including managing the Erasmus+ programme TRIBOS+ and conducting research on diamond-like carbon coatings and lubricants. Currently, at the Jožef Stefan Institute, Dr. Arshad is spearheading research in 3D printing of permanent magnets, aiming to create groundbreaking applications in sectors like electric vehicles and space technology. His extensive experience with various characterization techniques, including SEM, AFM, XPS, and TEM, complements his passion for exploring new realms in material science. Dr. Arshad's career is a testament to his dedication to advancing material science and its applications in modern technology.
